Maturation is key for Jamaal Charles

Every coach is looking for it. Every coach is expecting it. The only question is whether it is going to happen and when. Talent is great and experience is better, but maturation is a football player's ultimate goal.

On Monday, when Jamaal Charles met with the media, he was asked about his thoughts on average yards per carry at Texas. "There is nothing wrong with four yards per carry. If you do that three plays in a row, that's a first down," Charles answered.

That statement got me thinking. We always talk about the complication of the game of football. We always talk about the chess match that is the game of football. We always talk about the game of football in terms of its complexity.

Lou Holtz said, "Football is nothing more than blocking and tackling."
