NU Notes: Williams making a run at playing time
With junior Andy Christensen out for the entire 2007 season, Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan said on Wednesday that he's looking at several different players to step in and fill his spot.
One name that appears to have emerged is redshirt freshman Keith Williams. Callahan said on Wednesday that a lot of his young linemen have been stepping up their play this week.
"We've watched a lot of guys, especially up front with Andy Christensen being out," Callahan said. "We looked at a lot of different combinations and a lot of different guys. Keith Williams has really intrigued me this week and he's really practiced well. He's really made a move, so I'm impressed with him.
"Jacob Hickman has done an excellent job, so I really like what he's done on the practice field, as well as Mike Huff. D.J. Jones has made a move, but I'd like to see him progress a little faster. That's going to be a good group for the future."
As for Williams, Callahan said there are a lot of things that stand out to him when he breaks down his play.
"I like his explosiveness," Callahan said. "He's getting more confidence in his play. Usually for a lineman, once they begin to see the big picture and they have a good feel and a good understanding and they can put it to their performance, that's an encouraging sign.
