Several key OOC matchups in 07-08
Arizona's 2007-08 basketball season will include one of the toughest schedules in the country. Throughout the non-conference and conference seasons, the UA will go up against some of the most talented players in the nation.
Arizona returns one of the best players in the Pac-10 in sophomore forward Chase Budinger while sophomore center Jordan Hill is ready for a breakout year and freshman guard phenom Jerryd Bayless will also create headaches for opposing coaches.
The big three for Arizona will have their hands full all season with several key match ups that will help determine if this year's version of the Wildcats will make a run in the NCAA Tournament.
GOAZCATS.com will take a look at the key match ups in the non-conference and conference schedules in a two-part series starting today.
Nov. 17th vs. Virginia: The Wildcats look for revenge against the Cavaliers of Virginia after suffering a 93-90 loss last season in Charlottesville. A major reason why the Cavaliers came out victorious was due to the outstanding play of Sean Singletary. The 6-foot-0, 175-pound senior point guard was relentless in his scoring against the Wildcats as he finished with 25 points while tacking on six assists.
Key Matchup: Singletary vs. Bayless - This will be Bayless' first major test of the season against a savvy veteran guard. Singletary knows how to score from inside and outside and can defend as well. Bayless will have to play a smart game and play his confident, aggressive style of basketball in order to get a leg up on Singletary and the Cavaliers.
Nov. 25 at Kansas: A matchup of two top programs will involve an immense amount of talent on the floor. Julian Wright decided to make the jump to the NBA but the Jayhawks are still loaded. Mario Chalmers and Sherron Collins make up one of the most productive backcourts in the nation. Darrell Arthur had one of the biggest impacts of any freshmen in the country last year and when Brandon Rush returns to action, the frontcourt will be as athletic as any in the nation.
Key Matchup: Arthur vs. Hill - Two freshmen from a season ago who put up good numbers will go head-to-head in Lawrence (Kan). Arthur has the athleticism and ability to score all over the paint will frustrate the shot blocking abilities of Hill. Hill has established a short to mid-range jumper that will only help his ability to attack and punish the rim.
