Skinner: We Are For Real

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons had been slowly building momentum after three consecutive wins, and were looking to carry that momentum into a nationally televised game against No. 21 Florida State. After an impressive win against the Seminoles last Thursday, Deacons Illustrated caught up with Coach Grobe and some of the Demon Deacon players to get their thoughts on the win, and what's to come.

Jim Grobe

On adjustments to Wake's running game at halftime…

"We actually started to try and run the football inside more. We tried some orbits and reverses and those kinds of things and they were really sitting on those plays. They were doing a great job getting penetration so we felt like if we popped a few inside runs we could win. Coach Lobotzke did a good job at halftime. Our defensive coaches pretty much stayed with the defense at halftime and the offensive coaches did a great job of rallying our kids. I really think the key to running the football was to go between the tackles.

On Riley Skinner's performance…

This game says a lot about Riley. That one pick was just silly, he should have ran with it. Don't tell him I just said he was silly. But, the other pick was a gamble. We tried to do the stutter up the sideline, and we knew that the free safety had a chance to get there, and he might have put a little too much air on it, but that play was really on us [the coaches]. It was a homerun play, but that was really on the coaches, not Riley. Our defense was just playing so well that we thought it was a good time to try that. We never lost confidence in him, I thought he played well the whole game. I'm not happy with the two interceptions obviously, but one is on us, and the other he just would have been better to pull it down and run with it.

On Josh Adams

Special. The homerun, that's what Josh gives you. He's got a lot of potential, and he's just going to get better and better. He's got really good foot speed, and against a team like Florida State you've got to have that once in a while. I thought Micah did a good job pounding the ball, and I thought Josh gave us a nice change of pace with his foot speed.
