Horns win, face Arkansas-Monticello
The No.15 Texas Longhorns improved to 2-0 on Friday night with a 73-42 win over UC Davis in the opening round of the StubHub Legends Classic. The Longhorns got off to a slow start for a second straight game taking only a 35-29 lead into the half, but took control in the second half after switching to a 2-3 zone against the Princeton style offense of UC Davis.
The Longhorns were led in scoring by A.J. Abrams with 21 points, while D.J. Augustin scored 10 points and dished out 11 assists. Connor Atchley joined Abrams and Augustin in double figures with 11 points, while Damion James recorded nine points and 12 rebounds.
The Longhorns held UC Davis (1-2) to just 30.2% from the field and 25% from the three-point line after a hot start. UC Davis made six of 14 three-pointers in the first half against the Texas man to man defense, but managed just one of 14 in the second half against the 2-3 zone after Texas made the switch to take the Aggies out of their offensive flow in the half court.
The Longhorns again struggled to take charge on the boards holding just a 30-24 advantage for the game two nights after New Mexico State out rebounded the Aggies 47-20.
