Vanderbilt secures 13th commitment

The Vanderbilt Commodores secured their 13th verbal commitment from the 2008 recruiting class last week when Lafayette (Mo.) offensive lineman Caleb Welchans committed to the program after taking an unofficial visit to the school during the Kentucky game.

The 6-foot-6, 280-pound tackle prospect was All-Suburban West Conference this year while helping the Lancers to a 6-4-1 record and the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. He was also all-conference as a junior.

Running a 5.1 in the forty and 4.8 in the shuttle, Welchans is considered one of the top offensive line prospects from the state of Missouri and is known for low pad level and ability to effectively utilize his long arms.

A two-way player for the Lancers, Welchans has also collected 41 tackles and three sacks this season on defense.

VandySports.com received official confirmation on Tuesday morning from Caleb's father Greg Welchans.

"He did committ to Coach Johnson last Tuesday."
