Frogs looking at Carona among others

With the graduation of senior kicker Chris Manfredini looming right around the corner, the TCU Horned Frogs have made finding a kicker one of the primary needs for the 2008 class.

The Frogs had their hopes set high on Klein kicker Randy Bullock until he committed to Texas A&M back in October. Now the Frogs coaching staff have built another list of possible replacements and on that list is Beaumont Kelly kicker Donnie Carona.

The 6-foot, 210 pounder has impressed several colleges around the country with his leg strength hitting 4-of-5 field goals with a long of 48. He also averaged 42 yards on 24 punts and most importantly from a field position stand point Carona's kickoffs reached the end zone 80-percent of the time.

Carona recently picked up an offer from Stephen F. Austin and has been getting interest from Ole Miss, Baylor, Houston, LSU, Sam Houston.

"I was talking to Baylor and Ole Miss the most before the coaches got fired," he said. "I'm kind of waiting and seeing what will go on there. I was also talking to U of H(Houston) too, but they went to Baylor so I may still end up talking to them there. I've also been talking to Louisville too, they have their kicker graduating and they said they're looking for a kicker. Sam Houston has also been talking to me along with LSU a little bit."

"I'm looking at academics, I want to go to a good school where I can learn a lot and get a good education. The football program too, how good they are if they're building toward something. The campus and facilities matter too, I just want to go where I fit in."

Carona has a slight favorite but says the chance at kicking at the next level is most important to him.

"LSU would be nice," he said. "I like them because of how big it is. But I just want to have the shot at kicking at the Division 1 level."

Back to TCU, Carona visited the campus when the Frogs opened up against Baylor and considers them a team he has a high interest in.

"I've been up there one time when they played against Baylor," he said. "I like them a lot, they started off the year ranked high. The coaches said they were going to get back in touch with me when they get back. Coach Sharp said they are looking a four kickers around the country and that I was one of them."
