Brown to start
NEW ORLEANS - Georgia coach Mark Richt announced that Thomas Brown will start at running back in the Sugar Bowl against Hawaii.
Knowshon Moreno sprained his ankle in the season-finale against Georgia Tech, but Richt said the reason for naming Brown the starter was only partly because of the injury to the heralded freshman.
"It was a combination of Thomas' performance and Knowshon's health," Richt said. "Knowshon will be 100 percent at the start of the game, but we won't know how long that will last.
"But also, Thomas played well at the end of the season, and he actually has a higher yards-per-carry average that Knowshon. We feel comfortable with it."
Moreno has practiced for the past week with his left ankle wrapped, but has shown no signs of a limp or discomfort the last two days working out in the Louisiana Superdome.
Brown, who rushed for 139 yards and touchdown in Georgia's 31-17 rout of Georgia Tech, has run for 706 yards on 154 carries and nine score. Moreno leads the Bulldogs with 1,273 yards on 239 carries and 12 touchdowns.
Moreno said Sunday that the wrap on his ankle was simply precautionary.
