Father knows best

For an athlete, having a famous father who played the same sport can be a double-edged sword. It can be an advantage because of all the knowledge the father can impart to his son, and it can also be a negative because the player may have to live up to sometimes-unfair expectations.

But for Northwestern signee Hunter Bates, having a father who was a football star has been nothing but a positive experience. His dad, of course, is Bill Bates, who enjoyed a 15-year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys and was one of the most popular players on America's most popular team.

"A lot of people talk about the negatives of living up to my dad's legend - he has three Super Bowl rings - but I don't see it that way," said the future Northwestern safety.
