Scrimmage Insider: Ponder gets his chance
After two non-contact practices in shorts and one half-contact workout in shells (shoulder pads and helmets), the Seminole football team donned the full pads for the first time on Saturday. After spending the first half of the day on the practice fields getting in some special teams work, the players and coaches headed inside Doak Campbell Stadium for a few competitive drills followed by a short pseudo-scrimmage.
With it being the first day in pads, and with Saturday marking the third straight day of practice, it's not surprising that things were a little ragged on both sides of the ball. Nevertheless, both the offense and defense had their moments.
Easily the highlight of the day was a 70-yard touchdown pass from Christian Ponder to Rod Owens. The rising sophomore quarterback hit the speedy receiver in stride on a short route at the line of scrimmage and the rest was taken care of with timely blocks and instinctive running by Owens. Right after the catch, freshman offensive guard Will Furlong had the key block that gave the Jacksonville native room to run and he was able to use his speed to get to the endzone.
