A-Day sidebar: McCullough impresses

When Alfred McCullough opened Alabama's spring football practice at defensive end, he still looked a lot like the noseguard he was a year ago. Out of position, if not out of shape.

On Saturday, the Athens, Ala., native looked right at home.

McCullough earned the Dwight Stephenson Most Valuable Lineman award, the A-Day MVP for trench men, and showed Crimson Tide fans that UA's depth at defensive end doesn't begin and end with Luther Davis.

"

McCullough made six tackles Saturday - all solos - and added a sack and two pass deflections. At 317 pounds, he gives the defensive coaches a bigger option. And after playing a season at noseguard, where he practiced against the likes of All-SEC center Antoine Caldwell, he is now well-versed in the physical demands of the defensive front at the major college level.

"

McCullough was not available for post-game interviews.
