Madison on Burnett's tentative tour list

The state of Texas recently produced a handful of defensive backs for the University of Wisconsin, but Kerry Cooks hopes to add a defensive lineman to that group by the end of summer.

The Badger secondary coach was one of the first to establish a relationship with Brayden Burnett, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound defensive end from Southlake (Texas) Carroll who is nearing 25 scholarship offers.

"Coach Cooks is my recruiting coach at Wisconsin and they were one of my first offers," Burnett told BadgerBlitz.com Sunday night. "We've kept in touch ever since and I'm trying to make it up there this summer."

Cooks, who was the lead recruiter for Marcus Cromartie, Shelton Johnson and Devin Smith in UW's 2008 recruiting class, could be a the reason Burnett visits Madison in the next few weeks.

"I'd say we have a pretty good relationship," said Burnett, who reported a 4.6 time in the 40-yard dash. "He's talked to my parents on the phone and he's been to my school. He just seems like a great guy and a great coach.

"I really don't know a whole lot (about Wisconsin). I know they have a solid program over the past few years and have a good coaching staff and are a Big Ten title contender every year. I'm just trying to figure out a time when I can make a trip up there."

Though he doesn't have a list of favorites, Burnett does have seven locations across the country where he would like to tour this summer.

"I'm still pretty open because I know anything can change on a daily basis," Burnett said. "Right now I'm trying to schedule my visits for the summer and I want to make it out to Colorado, Missouri, Arizona State, Michigan, Arkansas, California and Wisconsin.

"After I get a chance to see these schools I'd like to make a decision by June or July."

Distance away from home, according to the 2009 prospect, will not play a factor in his decision.

"I'm going to venture off; there's a 99 percent chance that I'll be playing out of state," he said. "I really don't think distance is going to play a factor."

In addition to Burnett, Wisconsin has officially offered nine (known) defensive ends in the 2009 class: Shelby Harris (Badger verbal), David Gilbert, Keenan Graham, Cornelius Carradine[db], [db]Antwon Higgs, Pat Muldoon, Jonathan Newsome and Davon Custis.
