Croom looking forward to challenge

Mississippi State head coach Sylvester Croom held his weekly press conference today looking forward to the challenge that beginning the season on the road presents.

Croom will take his Bulldogs to Louisiana Tech on Saturday and said he will be able to gauge where his team is at this point.

"We're looking forward to the game this week," Croom said. "It's going to be a great challenge opening the game on the road in an environment we haven't been into. This will be a very good test for us early to see a road situation and whether we can handle things that may come up."

Croom said it would be vital for his team to get off to a fast start on Saturday.

"It's really important for us to start fast and start strong on the road in this ball game," Croom said. "Being on the road, we need to get off to a big start. I'm sure their fans, their players and everybody in that environment is very excited. We have to get off to a good start in order to have success there."

Croom addressed several concerns Louisiana Tech poses on both sides of the ball. Louisiana Tech surrendered on average of 424.2 yards per game last season but Croom's trepidation remains focused on their defensive abilities.

"My big concern coming into this game looking at their film is they are very fast on defense even though they lost a lot of people," Croom said. "If I were coaching them, I would like the way they play and the way they hit people. I'm not thrilled about it being on the other side of the ball.

"Their schemes on defense can create a lot of problems. They are very sophisticated with their schemes on defense as far as their coverages. They like to bring a lot of blitzes and do a real good job of mixing pressure in their scheme and coverage variations. Our quarterback is going to have to be very sharp in recognizing what they are trying to do."
