Herndon making a name for himself

Courtney Herndon isn't just a number, anymore. The backup strong safety did a little bit of everything, became a star among his teammates and, also important, discovered Kansas State coach Ron Prince even called him by name after the Wildcats' 69-10 dismantling of Football Championship Subdivision member Montana State on Saturday night.

Sometimes it takes time to capture attention. Herndon has received plenty of it from Prince after two games this season.

"Until this week, I've just called him No. 20 since he's been here and I've started calling him by his name," Prince said. "He's done a really good job for us."

Here's what Herndon has accomplished so far: He has eight tackles (third on team), including two for a loss with one sack, one interception, one fumble recovery for a touchdown, one blocked punt, and one pass break-up as K-State won its first two games and prepares for its first road trip to Louisville, 1-1, on Sept. 17.

Look around. Some players don't have so many different statistics in an entire season.

Now Herndon has a name. And it's quickly becoming a household name as well.

"It feels good to have a name," Herndon said. "People like to joke with me and call me all different kinds of names, little nicknames, but it feels good for Coach Prince to call me Courtney Herndon. I like it."
