Akeem Ayers budding star

Redshirt freshman Akeem Ayers has made some big time plays over the last two games. There aren't many players the size of Ayers who can cover running backs out of the backfield like he did 40 yards down the field against Arizona. His play in space against Fresno State was a big time.

If Ayers continues to improve he has the stuff to be a very special player.

BruinBlitz.com talked to Ayers about his recent performances after practice earlier this week.

BruinBlitz.com: Akeem you have had two good weeks of football. Tell the folks what are the keys for your success lately?

Ayers: "I'm just getting more comfortable and confident with the defense. That's all I thought I needed was confidence by knowing the plays of the defense and after that I can just play football and make plays."

BruinBlitz.com: Do you think that you tick off running backs when you are covering them 40 yards down the field like you did against Arizona?

Ayers: "(laughs) I guess they don't expect for a linebacker to stick with them. I guess they will have another thing coming if they think they're going to outrun me."

BruinBlitz.com: You did something just as impressive against Fresno State that play out in space where you chased that running back down in the flat and caught him then tackled him before he could turn the corner. Can you talk about that?

Ayers: "We were in a man to man defense and I was kind of out leveraged because he was on the other side of the field to me. I just turned started running and didn't look back…"
