Monday, Ian Campbell finally laughed. Less than a week before, Kansas State coach Ron Prince announced to his team in a quite meeting room filled with mixed emotions that he wouldn't be back next season. Yes, these have been uncertain times for the Wildcats. A four-game losing streak and the ouster of their head coach definitely wasn't a part of the plan entering the season. Still, something, someone, made Campbell crack up on Monday. It was Reggie Walker.
Campbell was in the middle of talking about the "trying days" -- last Wednesday through Saturday, which culminated in a 41-24 loss at No. 13 Missouri. He was talking about guys not cashing it in and about facing adversity in life and about the team's deep desire to beat Nebraska and Iowa State to earn eligibility for a possible bowl berth.
Then Walker, the excitable senior outside linebacker, entered the interview room at the Vanier Football Complex dressed in his purple K-State polo shirt. And Campbell laughed.
"Reggie doesn't even have to be up here (for interviews)," Campbell whispered. "He doesn't know that I had them call him up to be up here."
Walker spotted his fellow senior roommate as reporters and TV cameras approached. Walker isn't a big fan of all of the TV cameras. Campbell knew that. Thus the joke. And Walker suddenly discovered it was at his expense.
"You 'blank-blank,'" Walker said, except he didn't really say 'blank-blank.' He used another word, which caused onlookers to erupt in laughter.
"Man," Walker said, shaking his head, "I was sleeping, too."
"Oh," Campbell shrugged, "sorry about that."
