Ducks after another JC WR?

The Oregon Ducks may have found one diamond in the rough with the verbal commitment of Huntington Beach (Calif.) Golden West College wide receiver Lavasier Tuinei in mid-November, but apparently have decided one tall tree does not make a forest in the great Northwest. Oregon is close to offering yet another JUCO wide receiver from the Golden State and he says he will visit in January.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Los Angeles Harbor College has a handful of DI recruits this season but none more imposing than wide receiver Chris Matthews. With early offers from New Mexico, Akron and Marshall, two more came in last week from the SEC and Conference USA with the Pac 10 showing heavy interest.

"I just picked up an offer from Kentucky on Sunday and I talked to Memphis on Tuesday and later they told me they were going to offer me," Matthews said. "I am guessing that Oregon is going to come around. I just got off the phone with them last night and it sounds like they are going to come around this week to see my coaches and it sounds like they are going to offer me."

Matthews is 6-foot-5, 210 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash around 4.5 seconds. He finished with 32 receptions for 529 yards and four touchdowns in eight games for the Seahawks in 2007. If that was not enough, Matthews followed it up by leading the state with 80 receptions in nine games for 1,235 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2008.

Matthews says the whole recruiting process is starting to feel normal.

"It has been overwhelming," Matthews said. "It is a lot but I am starting to get used to it."

Matthews graduated from Dorsey High School (Calif.) in 2007 and had interest from UCLA and Washington State before failing to qualify academically. He says a visit has been set for Oregon in January and likes the prospects of potentially playing for the Ducks.

"They said they wanted to trip me out there on January 9," Matthews said. "I feel good about it. "They had a so-so season this year but one of my friends from Dorsey (Jeremiah Johnson) plays up there and he was telling me they have a fun offense up there."

Matthews has also had recent interest from Utah, but the Utes have not made an official offer and he has been playing phone tag with the coaching staff.

"Utah has been calling me but I have missed them," Matthews said. "They have been talking to my coaches."
