Sam down to two
Hitchcock High School standout Michael Sam has been on the radar of Arizona State defensive coordinator Craig Bray for nearly a year now. Sam reports offers from Arizona State, Colorado State, Houston and Iowa State.
The 6-foot-3 230-pounder had been the heavily favoring Iowa State until head coach Gene Chizik left for Auburn. Since then Sam has dropped Iowa State from consideration.
Hitchcock is a 2A school which somewhat limited Sam's exposure. He first caught the attention of many recruiters at the Texas State 7-on-7 Tournament in June. Sam normally lines up defensive end and left tackle but on the first day of the tournament he stood out for his play at linebacker.
Arizona State and Colorado State had been recruiting Sam since early 2008 and it looks like that persistence could pay off for one of the schools.
"I am hearing from Arizona State, Colorado State and some others but I am not really interested in any others," Sam said "There are other schools that are really interested but I have narrowed it down to Arizona State and Colorado State.
"I have been hearing from those two schools since back when they started their evaluations for the class of 2009 back in February. They were the first two schools to come out and see me. In fact Coach Bray and Coach Brown both came out on the same day. They both liked me and offered soon after. Its kind of funny how now it will end with those two schools."
Sam runs the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds and has a bench max of 270 pounds and a squat max of 630 pounds. He also carries a 3.1 gpa and scored 1230 on the SAT.
"Coach Bray is actually coming out [Wednesday] for an in-home visit," Sam said. "ASU is recruiting me as a linebacker/defensive end. I really have no preference, wherever they want me to play is where I will be, it doesn't matter."
Hitchcock finished at 7-3 and lost in the second round of the playoffs. Sam was first-team all-district for offensive line and for defensive end. He was also named All-Houston area team as a defensive end.
Sam is not playing basketball this season as he has in the past. He does plan to begin lifting to add weight as well as competing in track.
"I am coming out to visit Arizona State on the 16th," Sam said. "Then I going to out to Colorado State the next weekend I plan on deciding after my trips.
"I really like the coaching staffs from ASU and CSU. I really like that both have kinesiology, the major that I want to study. I have wanted to go out of state but the location doesn't matter. It could be the desert it could be the mountains, it doesn't matter to me. It will come down to where I feel the most comfortable."
