East-West Shrine Notebook: McGee shines
HOUSTON, Texas - The eyes of the NFL's scouting world can be found on the practice fields of the Houston Texans this week, as the two teams in the East-West Shrine Game prepare for Saturday afternoon's game. Three Aggies - quarterback Stephen McGee, fullback Jorvorskie Lane and defense end Michael Bennett - are members of the West squad and are getting a chance to strut their stuff before some of the league's foremost talent evaluators.
Any doubts about whether the Shrine game is taken seriously by professionals is quickly erased when one sees the number of scouts watching practice. Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome was the best-known spectator, but teams like the Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins and Chicago Bears sent large contingents of talent evaluators to Houston for the week. Some of them were willing to discuss what they saw during Tuesday's practice on the condition they remain anonymous. Here are a few things I saw during the West's practice, along with comments from some scouts:
