A motivated Brown ready for CSU

You have to give Colorado State football commitment Te'Jay Brown credit. When he finds something he wants, he is willing to work for it. That ranges from NCAA Division I football scholarships to cell phones. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound defensive line recruit from Saint Petersburg, Fla. will be in Fort Collins this summer, cell phone in toe.

"When I was 16 years-old I told my mom I wanted a cell phone," Brown said. "She told me I could have one if I paid for it, so I went to this Ya-Ya's (chicken restaurant) to get a job and everyday they would bring this truck full of 300 or 400 uncooked chickens and I would skin them and pull out all the guts. It was nasty, but I got used to it.

"Surprisingly, it is easy... Really easy."

Brown said he got his cell phone, "a nice one too."

Brown and his cell phone have been busy this winter as he welcomed in football coaches from around the country looking for a commitment from the Saint Petersburg big man. Colorado State offered him a scholarship, while schools like Indiana, Cincinnati, UAB and Louisville all contacted Brown before he committed to the Rams in December.

Since the end of the season he has been enjoying being honored by various groups as an All-Area and All-State player, but it has taken some getting used to. A humble man by nature, the soft-spoken Brown said he has enjoyed the spotlight.

"This is crazy because everyone looks at me and the same time they talk about St. P. High school they point to me," Brown said. "That is crazy because outside my county, I was like a nobody. It is cool, I could save the paper and show my son or grandson someday that your granddaddy was a beast."

In the meantime, Brown is trying something new this spring, trying out for the track team to throw the shot put and discus. He added he is also working on keeping his grades up and working out to get ready for the football season. He said he is also planning a nice ceremony to sign his national letter of intent, but realizes that is just the start of his college football career.

"Just going to dress up for the ceremony - me and my mom," Brown said. "The newspaper is going to be there and the school is going to do a thing on the morning show for me. I am trying to keep focus, because when you sign it is the next step. Now that you made it, you have to go the next step. If you get content, you might fall behind."

Brown, who said Plief and Lil' Wayne are currently getting a lot of play in his iPod, said his goals going into his first season in Fort Collins are within reach.

"I'm not going to say that I am not going to get any playing time, because it is all in my hands and I am going to work hard," he said. "My goals for the season are to get bigger, stronger and hopefully fight for a starting job. That is why they are going to bring in - to compete for a starting job. I want to make some good grades too and make some good friends too."

When asked one thing people don't know about him, Brown responded, "I love golf. My godparents live in this nice neighborhood with a golf course in their backyard. I don't know what I am under par, but I like to go knock some balls in, but its fun."
