Spartans eyeing Renaissance DB

Michigan State struck it big last year when they were able to land linebacker Chris Norman and athlete Dana Dixon from Detroit Renaissance High School. The Spartan staff is back at Renaissance looking for more talent and one player that already has their attention is Mylan Hicks.

Hicks is a 5-foot-11, 185-pound defensive back prospect that already has scholarship offers from Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Arizona. Hicks camped at Michigan State last summer and clocked a 4.41 forty yards dash.

Last year Hicks hit the camp scene and impressed people with his overall skill, but at 5-foot-9, 175-pounds, many people were hoping he would add a few inches and pounds over teh coming year. That is exactly what has happened, and now Hicks has the ideal size to be a high-level cornerback at the Division 1 level.

SpartanMag.com caught up with Coach Antoine Edwards of renaissance last night and he gave us some details on Hicks' recruitment and what the plans are the next few months.

"Things are going real well. Mylan already has three offers and I expect a lot more will be coming soon. Coach Corwin Brown from Notre Dame said he is one of the top cornerbacks on eth board for them. Coach Gillum from Ohio State is really high on him and I know Coach Barnett from Michigan State also likes Mylan."

One of the things the Coach Edwards likes to point out is the fact that Hicks is younger than 95% of the recruits out there for the class of 2010. Many kids are held back a year for development purposes or just have late birthdays. Neither is the case with Hicks.

"Mylan is young for his age. He is only 16-years old. He just turned 16 last month, January 21st. He is actually the same age as most of our sophomores. He is going to leave high school as one of the best players to ever come out of Renaissance."

So where does Michigan State stand with Hicks?

"I am not worried about Michigan State. I know the staff up there well and how they do things. It is a process. It was the same thing last year for Dana. They tell you exactly how things are and I understand that. I know Mylan is going to be up there and once he does his thing, everything will work out."

One of the things Coach Edwards is looking forward to is having Hicks attend many of the camps and combines that will be held in the coming months.

"I want Mylan to go to as many of those as possible. I know what he is going to do at those cams and I know everyone is going to be impressed. We have nothing to hide at Renaissance. We know which kids are legit and Mylan definitely is."

Hicks will once again be playing both ways for Detroit Renaissance. Look for him to put up huge numbers from his running backs spot and for teams to avoid throwing to his side on defense.

Hicks was at the Spartan Junior Day last month and was invited back up for the Junior Day being held on February 22nd. Spartanmag.com will be following up with Hicks personally in the near future to get his comments about Michigan State and his recruitment.

SpartanMag.com has personally scouted Hicks on several occasions and there is no doubt that he will be one of the better prospects in the state for the class of 2010. Don't be surprised if Hicks makes a steady rise in the rankings throughout the next 11 months.SpartanMag.com is going to make sure that Hicks highlight film gets in the hands of the right people at Rivals.com.
