Spartan target has big weekend

One of the top prospects in Michigan for the class of 2010 is Austin Gray of Warren Fitzgerald High School. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound prospect was offered by Michigan State two weeks ago at the Spartan Elite Junior Day.

This week Gary and his family embarked on a Midwest tour which included stops at the University of Illinois, the University of Iowa and the University of Wisconsin. Spartanmag.com spoke with Fitzgerald Coach Jason Byers and he gave us some details about the trip.

"Austin said he had a good time at the schools," he said. "They went to Iowa and Illinois and then also made a trip up to Wisconsin to catch the end of their junior day as well. He got to meet with the coaches at the school and see the facilities. He was offered by Illinois and Iowa."

The offers from the Hawkeyes and the Illini brings Grays offer total close to double-digits. In addition to the schools, fellow Big ten teams Indian and Michigan State have offered. Purdue also extended an early offer when Defensive Coordinator Brock Spack was on staff.

Did the Badgers talk about a scholarship offer?

"Austin said he met with Coach Bilema as soon as he got there and it went well. He was told that the staff will be meeting on Monday morning to go over things and Austin will know something one way or another late this week. He really liked the facilities at Wisconsin. He liked all the schools they all had their positives."

One other school that is involved in Gray's recruitment is the Michigan Wolverines. Gray is scheduled to attend the Michigan Night of Champions Junior Function late this week.

One of the interesting aspects of the Spartan recruitment of Gray is that they offered him as a fullback. With that said, Gray will certainly get a look at linebacker too. Getting Gray and Bullough and in the same class would be akin to when Ohio State took high schools linebackers A.J Hawk, Mike D'Andrea, Bobby Carpenter and Mike Kudla. Hawk was supposed to play fullback and Carpenter was "supposed" to play MIKE.

Michigan State is hoping to have Gray on campus again later this month for a session of spring practice.

Spartan Coach Dan Enos serves as the primary recruiter of Gray for Michigan State. His other primary recruits include Coach Parker from Iowa, Coach Mitchell from Illinois and Coach Alexander from Wisconsin.

SpartanMag.com will follow-up with Gray later this week. The additional offers only serve to cement Gray as one of the best prospect in Michigan for the class of 2010.
