Denison RB planning visit to College Station
Denison running back D.J. Jones is a hard guy to catch on the field. The 6-foot, 220-pound back was one of the leading rushers in Class 4A last season, accumulating nearly 3,000 yards in total offense and 38 touchdowns rushing and receiving last season. Jones gained 2,646 yards of those yards and 35 touchdowns alone on the ground and averaged a whopping 11 yards per carry in churning out long run after long run.
He typically was taken out of games after compiling 200 yards in a half, an exception being a game against McKinney when he rushed for over 400 yards and six touchdowns when given an opportunity to play beyond regulation and into overtime.
He's also a hard guy to catch off the field. Jones started at power forward for Denison's basketball team and was named to the district's All-Defensive team after helping the Yellowjackets to a first round upset of state-ranked Carrollton Neweman Smith. He runs track and competes in the spring relay and 200-meter run, recently ripping off a sub-22-second run at a track meet in Forney. He even finds time to earn money at a part time job, working nights and weekends when he's not competing and studying.
In fact, the only thing that has slowed Jones down is the surgeon's knife. Jones had surgery on Wednesday to remove a cyst from his wrist and move some of the tendons in his wrist and thumb around so that it wouldn't grow back. Due to the need to let his skin heal, he may not be able to do most lifts in weight training or run track for approximately six weeks although he expects to be back in time for Denison's spring football practice which starts in May.
His busy schedule has kept him from taking many unofficial visits this year. However, with the free time that he has now he has scheduled one unofficial visit for April 20.
Jones has scholarship offers from Texas Tech, Oregon, Arkansas, Florida and Kansas. He is also gaining heavy interest from Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Alabama.
