2009 signee update: LaDarius Perkins

Mississippi State got a pleasant surprise when a member of the 2009 signing class dropped by practice on Tuesday.

Greenville, Miss., three-star running back LaDarius Perkins came by to check out his future teammates and get a fell for what he will experience starting in the fall.

"Practice was good," Perkins said. "I got a chance to see a lot of the players and I think I can come in and help the offense out. I liked the way the coaches were really excited. Coach (Dan) Mullen got out there and was doing drills with them. It was exciting to see a head coach be so energetic."

Perkins got a chance to talk to Mullen as well as his position coach Greg Knox and several other assistant coaches on his visit.

With the recent string of injuries at running back, Perkins' 4.4 speed may come into play as a true freshman. The Bulldogs lost Arnil Stallworth to a torn ACL this spring, Christian Ducre has been slowed by an injured shoulder and Robert Elliott is still recovering from knee surgery.

The coaching staff advised him to be prepared to come in the fall ready to play.

"They told me to just be ready when I come because they need playmakers. They told me that they had a couple of running backs get hurt and they need me on the field."

Perkins has been busy keeping his body in shape during the offseason.
