Boynton in on NY hoopster
South Carolina's basketball program has a storied history with players from New York, from John Roche and Bobby Cremins to former player and current assistant Mike Boynton. Darrin Horn's staff has its eye on another New York product.
New York (NY) Rice small forward Shane Southwell is enjoying the recruiting process right now and currently holds a handful of offers.
"Right now, I have offers from South Carolina, Providence, Marquette, and St. John's," he said. "I had one from Xavier and after that staff left they talked to me about Arizona but they have not offered me again."
The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder talked with GamecockCentral.com about his interest in South Carolina.
"South Carolina, I know it's in the SEC, a big powerhouse conference," he said. "I might get the chance to play early there.
That's pretty much all I know right now."
New York native Mike Boyton is handling Southwell's recruitment.
"Coach Boynton is recruiting me from there," he said. "He is from New York, so we're kind of on the same page like that. I like him and the head coach (Darrin Horn). They make me feel welcome. Hopefully I'll be going down there soon."
Southwell, who is currently ranked 84th in the Rivals 150 for the Class of 2010, says that schools are recruiting him at numerous positions.
"They're talking to me about the three, but really everything from one to three," he said. "I do a little bit of everything, I'm versatile."
Though he wants to wait on more offers, Southwell, who says he averaged around 13 points per game last season, has three schools he likes the most at the moment.
"The people on me the hardest, " he said when asked who his current favorites were. "Marquette, South Carolina, and Providence. Most likely, I will wait until the fall to decide."
