Many impress at local NUC

A number of locals finished well in the recent National Underclassmen regional combine held at Tabor Academy. Not the least of which was Marlborough (Mass.) High's Anthony Carter.

The 5-foot-9, 171-pound wide out/defensive back, who is receiving looks from several Division 1 schools, took home the overall Most Valuable Player honors for the junior class, with impressive test results. He ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash, 4.09-second shuttle drill, had a 30-1/2-foot vertical leap, 9-foot-6 broad jump, and had 18 repetitions at 185 pounds on the bench press.

Several other locals made good on their appearances.

Wethersfield (Conn.) High's Tyler Murphy and Bridgewater-Raynham (Mass.)'s Kevin Bumpus were named the quarterback MVPs. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Murphy had a 34-inch vertical, a 4.7 second 40, and 4.6 second shuttle. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Bumpus ran a 4.47 shuttle and 4.8 40.

The two running back MVPs were diminutive, but productive. Natick (Mass.)'s Antoine Wilson (5-foot-5, 163 pounds) ran a 4.61 40, a 4.39 shuttle, and had 19 reps at 185. Westminster (Conn.)'s Alex Martin (5-7, 170) ran a 4.57 shuttle with a 9-foot-1 broad jump and 31-inch vertical.

Framingham (Mass.)'s Richard Johnson was named the Combine King for his performance as a wide receiver. The 5-foot-8, 156-pounder had a 34-1/2 inch vertical leap, 4.58 second 40, and ran a 4.26 shuttle.

Two defensive back stuck out. DeVaghn Millington, a 6-foot-1, 200-pounder out of Richfield (Conn.), had a 33-inch vertical, 9-5 broad, 4.65 40, 4.26 shuttle, and had 16 reps at 185 pounds. Catholic Memorial's Justin Holmes had a 32-inch vertical, 9-9 broad and 4.26 shuttle as well as a 4.76 40.

Oxford (Conn.) running back Deven Diaz was the strongest of the afternoon. The 5-foot-9-1/2, 196-pounder had 28 reps at 185 pounds.

Other notable performances from the Class of 2010 include:

Irvin Scott (Brookline, Mass.), quarterback, 6-foot, 175 pounds. 28-inch vertical, 8-foot-11 broad, 4.54 40, 4.38 shuttle.

Mike Read (Barrington, R.I.), running back, 5-foot-8, 177 pounds. 4.55 40, 4.47 shuttle, 9-foot-6 broad, 32-1/2 vertical.

Chinedu Chukwu (Catholic Memorial), running back, 5-foot-11, 186 pounds. 30 inch vertical, 10 foot broad, 4.43 shuttle, 4.63 40.

Notable performances from the Class of 2011 were:

Jason Sylva (Tabor Academy) linebacker, 6-foot-2, 217 pounds. 26 vertical, 8-foot-10 broad, 4.66 shuttle, 4.98 40.

Nicholas McDaniels (Xaverian), defensive back, 5-foot-8, 160 pound. 29 vertical, 9-foot-5 broad, 4.31 shuttle, 4.53 40.

Adam Scerra (Marlborough), defensive back, 5-foot-6, 149 pounds. 27 vertical, 8-foot-6 broad, 4.26 shuttle, 4.74 40.
