Spartans looking closely at Ohio LB
Last week SpartanMag.com reported on the scholarship offer to offensive lineman Travis Jackson of Columbus DeSales High School. Jackson is not the only player at St. Francis DeSales that the Michigan State staff is actively recruiting, linebacker prospect Chi Chi Ariguzo is solidly on the radar and has an impressive list of scholarship offers himself.
Ariguzo is a 6-foot-3, 215-pound prospect that is know for his speed and ability to hit. Though he plays safety for his high school team,he projects as an outside linebacker at the next level. Ariguzo already boast an impressive list of offers which includes schools such as Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana and a host of other BCS programs. SpartanMag.com asked him about the schools that have been showing the most interest.
"All of the schools that have offered have visited school, he said. Coach (Luke) Fickell from Ohio State came as well. As far as the schools that have not offered yet, Cincinnati and Michigan State also stopped by."
Coach Mike Tressel serves as the primary recruit of Ariguzo for Michigan State University. Coach Tressel, who is also the linebacker's coach, obviously is hoping to have Ariguzo on campus this summer at a session of the Spartan's camp.
"I haven't made up my mind as far as camps yet, Ariguzo said. I have just been focused on working out for next year."
Ariguzo comes from a very athletic family. His older brother was an outstanding player for DeSales last year and ended up signing with Air Force. The younger Ariguzo, who already has double-digit offers prior to his senior year, isn't in a hurry to make his choice. SpartanMag.com asked him about a timetable for his decision.
"I think I am going to wait and take some visit before I make my choice, he said. "I'm looking for a school with a good academic program and a good football program."
Academics are an important aspect in the recruiting process for Ariguzo. He is a strong student who carries a 3.7 GPA. He hopes to major in either Pre-Med or Biology in college.
Columbus DeSales is always one of the top talent producing programs in Ohio and in addition Jackson and Ariguzo the Spartans are also taking a close look at another prospect from there, Adam Griffin.
Griffin is the son of Ohio State legend and two-time Heisman trophy winner Archie Griffin. The younger Griffin, who is listed as being 5-foot-9, 180-pounds stars as a running back and defensive back for DeSales. The Spartans are apparently taking a look at Griffin on the defensive side of the ball.
Griffin currently holds scholarship offers from Air Force, Navy and Eastern Illinois.
