Are Vols in Luc for a visit from top LB?

The camps and competitions almost have been too numerous to keep track of for Jeff Luc.

A splendidly talented linebacker with offers from virtually every major college football program across the country, Luc left nothing to chance during a busy summer.

"Every camp I had the opportunity to participate in, I took it," said the 6-foot-1-inch, 230-pounder from Port St. Lucie's Treasure Coast High School in South Florida. "I see at as me competing and getting better. That's why I'm not afraid to participate in any camp."

Nor is Luc, despite his status as the No. 1 linebacker in the nation and No. 8 overall prospect according to Rivals.com, afraid to take a deliberate, measured approach to the recruiting process - even as countless coaches and schools line up for his services.

"I"m starting to look at schools that I'm going to be of the most interesting," Luc said, "but I'm still going to take my time though."

Luc recently got a first-hand look at the University of Tennessee, which has long been among his myriad offers, when he visited Knoxville during the Volunteers' camp earlier this month. So what kind of impression did UT's program and coaches leave on the coveted prospect who last year amassed an astounding 125 tackles, 21 tackles for losses, nine sacks and a pair of interception?

Well, Luc now has his first official visit scheduled for Oct. 3 when the Vols host Auburn in an early-season SEC clash.

"I really like Tennessee," Luc said. "It was nice. It was real nice."

Recruited by the Vols' resident South Florida expert, Eddie Gran, Luc speaks with Tennessee's first-year running backs and special teams coach on a fairly regular basis.

"We communicate pretty regularly," said Luc, the preseason No. 1 prospect in the Sunshine State. "There's always something interesting to talk about, and (Gran) is easy to talk to, I think. He's good to communicate with."

Luc, with size, speed and an aggressive but instinctive approach to the game that coaches love, says he expects to trim his lengthy list of suitors down to a more manageable "five or 10" closer to the start of his senior season.

Logic suggests the Vols, as Luc's first scheduled official visit, will make the cut.
