Practice Notebook: A&M wraps up two-a-days
Texas A&M is winding down August training camp with Thursday being the final day of two-a-days before an early morning practice Friday to break camp. After a closed scrimmage Wednesday night, the Aggie coaching staff decided to let its players practice in just helmets and shorts during both practices inside the McFerrin Athletic Center on Thursday.
Despite being put through their paces Wednesday evening, the Aggies experienced a spirited day on the practice field even though it was devoid of the physical intensity that has been seen with the team in pads.
"Coming back after a scrimmage in which we got 110 snaps on offense and defense and another 30 or 40 snaps on special team so yesterday was kind of a grind for them, and I thought they came back and responded well," said A&M head coach Mike Sherman. "I thought the defense came out really fast this morning and did some good things as well as this afternoon. I though the guys competed well so I was encouraged by that."
A major reason for the excitement on both the offensive and defensive sidelines Thursday had to do with the reimplementation of the scoring system the Aggies used in spring drills. A&M has been using the scoring for a little over a week now during fall camp, and unlike in the spring the defense isn't dominating.
Thursday the offense finished the day ahead, 153-139.
