Carroll glad to be back in Columbus

As Pete Carroll and the USC Trojans crossed the Olentangy River, Carroll got to thinking about the last time he was in Columbus, 30 long years ago.

As a young football coach at Ohio State, Carroll reminisced about sitting in his office at St. John Arena, where the Buckeyes' played basketball until 1998. Carroll had a window with a nice view, and he saw a legend hustling through the streets of Columbus.

It was Woody Hayes.

"I looked out the window during the middle of the day, and Coach Hayes was walking down the sidewalk, coming back from the class he taught. I remember running out there across the parking lot to catch him and intercept him. I wanted to introduce myself and talk to him for the first time.

"I was just like a little kid, which I was at that time."
