STJ Gets 1st Road Win Over ND

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - D.J. Kennedy made a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left and St. John's held on to defeat Notre Dame, 69-68, Sunday night for its first BIG EAST road win of the season.

It was the second-straight win for St. John's (14-10, 4-8) after five straight losses. The Fighting Irish (17-9, 6-7) couldn't win without Luke Harangody, who was out with a deep bone bruise to his right knee. Notre Dame's Tory Jackson missed a pair of 3-pointers in the closing seconds.

Tim Abromaitis led the Irish with 24 points. His 3-pointer with 90 seconds left put the Irish ahead 66-64.

Dwight Hardy, who led the Red Storm with 16 points, made a 3 with 57 seconds left to give St. John's a 67-66 lead. But Tyrone Nash, who had a career-high 16, made two free throws with 38 seconds left to put Notre Dame back in front.

After an Abromaitis 3-pointer gave the Irish a 22-14 lead at the 9:41 mark in the first half, four-straight 3-pointers, including three by Hardy, gave the Red Storm a 12-0 run and a 26-22 lead with 6:33 remaining. Hardy had 12 points and was 4-of-6 from long distance in the first half alone, helping stake St. John's to a 37-34 advantage at halftime.

Anthony Mason Jr. added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, while also going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

Justin Burrell recorded double-figures for the fifth-straight game with a 12-point effort. Capped by a 3-point play with 5:08 remaining, Burrell scored five-straight Red Storm points to turn a 56-54 deficit into a 59-58 lead.

With the game tied at 53-53, St. John's went a combined 7-of-7 from the line and 4-of-6 from the field in the final 6:57.

St. John's returns home to face Seton Hall at Carnesecca Arena for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Feb. 17.
