Spring football schedule announced

Lane Kiffin's new era of Trojan football began with his return to USC last month, but it won't officially kick off until spring football commences on March 30. That will be the first time Kiffin, his father Monte Kiffin, Ed Orgeron and the rest of the staff get their first chance to mold a young, talented team into a contender.

Kiffin released his 2010 Spring Practice schedule on Monday. It is a series of 15 practices that span 33 days from starting on March 30 and ending with the Trojan Huddle on May 1.

There has been no official word on whether practices will be open to the public, but this will most likely be the case. Spring practices were always open under Pete Carroll and Kiffin kept his spring practices open while at Tennessee.

Under Carroll, the team would usually practice about four times a week, wrapping up the entire session in about four weeks.

Kiffin is spreading things out a bit more, practicing every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday over a five week span.

No official times were announced, but weekday practices should start around 3 p.m. while Saturday practices will likely start at 11 a.m. All practices will be on Howard Jones Field except for the Trojan Huddle at the Coliseum on May 1.

Quick spring ball notes:

  • USC will welcome three new enrollees to spring football, defensive back Patrick Hall, receiver Kyle Prater and running back Dillon Baxter.

  • Only two scholarship quarterbacks are on the roster for spring ball. Sophomore Matt Barkley is coming off wrist surgery but will be OK to practice and senior Mitch Mustain will get a ton of reps under center.

  • Running back coach Todd McNair and offensive coordinator John Morton are the only two coaches that were around for spring football practice in 2009. Will they be in place this year?

  • New secondary coach Willie Mack Garza will have his hands full trying to replace starters like Taylor Mays, Josh Pinkard, Kevin Thomas and Will Harris.
