Warhawks fall in opener
The 2010 season kicked off on Saturday for the Warhawks as they squared off against the #14 Arkansas Razorbacks at Little Rock's War Memorial Stadium.
Arkansas was led by a 400 yard passing performance behind Heisman Trophy contender Ryan Mallett in the 31 - 7 decision.
Mallett would connect with Greg Childs from 19 yards out at the 5:48 mark in the opening quarter to put the Hogs on top.
The Warhawks would go the entire first quarter, and into the second quarter before picking up a first down. ULM's offensive was led by redshirt freshman Jyruss Edwards, with 13 rushing yards.
At the half, the Warhawks had just 16 yards of total offense, three first downs, and five three-and-and-out possessions. Despite the statistical doom and gloom, ULM trailed just 7-0 at the half.
The defense carried the Warhawks in the first half as Alex Ibe intercepted Mallett with less than one minute remaining in the half, and quarterback sacks by Robert Nelson and Ken Dorsey set the tone.
Mallett would continue his offensive show in the second half, as he not only ran for a one yard score, but again connected with Childs for an 18 yard TD pass.
ULM would break onto the scoreboard with a 25 yard strike from Kolton Browning to Luther Ambrose late in the fourth quarter. Junior Radi Jabour would tack on the PAT.
ULM will return to the state of Arkansas next week as they open up Sun Belt Conference play with a 7pm Saturday match-up with the Arkansas Red Wolves. The Red Wolves fell to 0-2, 0-1 after losing to Louisiana-Lafayette 31-24 last week.
