Stars of Week Eight

Gardena Serra's superstar athlete George Farmer only needed a handful of plays to become the Section Sports Athlete of the Week for Coastal Southern California. The 6-foot-2 senior caught four passes for 179 yards in the Cavaliers' 52-13 win over Harvard-Westlake. Three of Farmer's receptions were for touchdowns. He also scored on a 65-yard punt return and intercepted a pass in the first quarter.

Farmer is one of California's most sought after recruits and has offers from more than a dozen schools. He finished second in the 100 meter dash at the CIF State Track and Field Championships in June.

Farmer and the Cavaliers face Mission League rival Chaminade in a battle of undefeated teams this Friday.

Inland Southern California

Centennial is undefeated, led by a big-time quarterback and shows no signs of slowing down as they move closer to a division title. However, these are not Matt Logan's Centennial Huskies; they are the Golden Hawks of Bakersfield Centennial. The quarterback is Cody Kessler, who committed to USC in June and is the Section Sports Athlete of the Week for Inland Southern California.

Kessler was magnificent in the Golden Hawks' biggest win of the season thus far, a 28-14 win over crosstown rival Bakersfield. The 6-foot-1 senior completed 11 of 18 pass attempts for a total of 271 yards to lead Centennial to victory. The Drillers' defense threw a variety of blitzes at Kessler and sacked him four times, but never drew him out of his comfort zone.

All three of Kessler's touchdown passes came in the first half, including a 94-yard connection with Timmy Martinez and a 75-yard pass to Tyler Fries. Kessler spread the ball to six different receivers, led by Fries's three receptions for 121 yards.

Kessler and the Golden Hawks close out the regular season with games against Liberty and Frontier. If they win those games as expected, they will earn their first Southwest Yosemite League title since 2007 and the top seed in the Central Section Division 1 playoffs.

Northern California

Dano Graves is the Section Sports Athlete of the Week for Northern California. The athletic quarterback led Folsom to a 35-20 win over previously-undefeated Pleasant Grove to clinch the Delta River League title. The 5-foot-9 senior passed for 154 yards and rushed for 81 yards but left the game in the third quarter after a blow to the head.

Graves completed 15 of 20 pass attempts, including three touchdown passes. Two of the touchdown passes were to Kori Babineaux. Babineaux, a 6-foot-3 senior, has a handful of scholarship offers to play college basketball. Graves carried the ball ten times, including a 20-yard touchdown run that put the Bulldogs on the board.

Graves has proven adept at eluding would-be tacklers and finding open receivers downfield but his small stature has scared off college coaches. Sacramento State is the only Division I program to offer him a scholarship. Graves' older brother David is the fourth-string quarter and a special teams standout for Hawaii.

Folsom has won eight in a row since opening the season with a 49-14 loss to Sacramento Grant. The Bulldogs close out the regular season against Oak Ridge on Friday.
