Inside the numbers: A toast to 2010
Each week during the season, we looked at some statistics involving individuals and/or teams that we found intriguing. Here is a season-ending version:
Ten teams averaged 200 yards rushing and passing this season: Auburn (284.8 rush/214.4 pass), Boise State (200.2/321.1), Michigan (238.5/250.2), Nevada (292.2/226.9), Ohio State (220.1/228.5), Oregon (287.6/243.1), Southern Miss (200.9/252.5), Stanford (213.8/258.2), TCU (246.8/229.5) and Tulsa (216.9/288.7). Each won at least 10 games except Michigan, which was 7-6, and Southern Miss, which was 8-5.
Nine teams averaged at least 40 points this season, led by Oregon's 47.0 per game. The Pac-10 (Oregon and Stanford) and WAC (Boise State and Nevada) each had two teams average as many as 40 points.
Two teams averaged at least 300 rushing yards per game, Georgia Tech (323.3 ypg) and Air Force (306.5). They met in the Independence Bowl and combined for just 449 rushing yards.
Nine teams averaged at least 300 passing yards per game, led by Hawaii (394.3 ypg). The Big 12 had three (Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech) and Conference USA (East Carolina and Houston) and the WAC (Boise State and Hawaii) had two each.
There were no 2,000-yard rushers this season; there were none in 2009, one in '08, three in '07 and none in '06 and '05.
There were 48 1,000-yard rushers this season. There were 53 in 2009, 54 in '08, 56 in '07, 36 in '06 and 46 in '05.
There was one 5,000-yard passer this season, Hawaii's Bryant Moniz, and he is the 11th passer in NCAA history to reach that plateau; there was one in 2009, two each in '08 and '07 and one in '06 after none reached the mark in '05.
There were three 4,000-yard passers this season. There were three in 2009, six in '08 and '07, three in '06 and two in '05.
There were 28 3,000-yard passers this season; there were 25 in 2009 and '08, 36 in '07 -- an all-time single-season high -- 17 in '06 and 18 in '05.
There were four 1,500-yard receivers this season; there were three in 2009, one in '08, two in '07, zero in '06 and one in '05.
There were 32 1,000-yard receivers this season; there were 29 in 2009, 33 in '08, 38 in '07, 21 in '06 and 28 in '05.
West Virginia allowed just three rushing TDs. The Mountaineers became just the third team since the turn of the century to be that effective against the run; TCU allowed three in 2000 and Ohio State allowed three in '07.
In a dubious distinction, Troy "led" the nation with 110 penalties. The least-penalized team was Wisconsin, with 41. By the way, Auburn committed 79 and Oregon 93.
The average number of offensive plays per game this season was 68.4, and the typical game lasted 3:12. Auburn ran 67.7 plays per game, Oregon 78.8. Oklahoma led the nation at 86.5 plays per game, while Wyoming averaged the fewest at 57.6.
