Power rankings: Clutch Walker grabs top spot

For a glimpse at how well the nation's two best guards are playing right now, consider this.

BYU's Jimmer Fredette scored 42 points Saturday in a 94-85 victory over Colorado State, marking the second time in his past three games he had exceeded the 40-point mark. Yet he couldn't maintain his status as the No. 1 point guard in the Rivals.com College Basketball Power Rankings, which measure the nation's top performers at each position.

As well as Fredette is playing, we couldn't ignore the clutch performance of Connecticut's Kemba Walker, who made a winning shot with 2 seconds left in a 61-59 victory over Villanova last week. Walker's big shot helped him regain the top spot he had lost to Fredette a week earlier.

"Of course the ball was going to be in my hands," Walker told reporters after the game. "Being the leader of this team, I wanted it to be in my hands. I was able to get a nice little shot off."

Fredette remains ahead of Walker in at least one respect. Fredette is the nation's leading scorer at 26.7 points per game, while Walker ranks second at 25.0 points per game. Fredette has a good shot of moving back on top of the power rankings next week by delivering a big performance Wednesday against undefeated San Diego State.

Walker's move represented the only change at the top of the power rankings. Duke shooting guard Nolan Smith, Duke small forward Kyle Singler, Arizona power forward Derrick Williams, Ohio State center Jared Sullinger and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski remained atop their respective positions. Sullinger also maintained his status as the nation's top freshman.

This week's power rankings take into account all results through Sunday's games. The rankings put a special emphasis on recent performances while also taking career achievements into consideration.
