The first five-stars: Eddie Goldman

MORE 2012 Rivals250 to Watch list

They are the best of the best. The players that are wanted by every program and destined to make a big impact at the college level and beyond.

Rivals.com has identified the first five-star prospects for the 2012 class and is unveiling them this week. Twelve prospects have been awarded five-stars but are not ranked at this time and we will profile three each day. The five-star spotlight is now on Washington (D.C.) Friendship Collegiate Academy defensive tackle Eddie Goldman.

Five stars: Eddie Goldman

Attributes: 6-4, 307, 5.2

Top schools: Offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Iowa, Georgia, LSU, Maryland, Miami, Nebraska, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia Tech and many others.

Scouting report: Goldman is a powerful defensive tackle who has quick hands, shows good balance and is very adept at pushing the pile and holding his ground against the run. He has excellent size for a defensive tackle, good agility and he gets off the snap quickly. He can handle double teams, get into the backfield to blow up plays and is willing to chase things down to the outside. Goldman is the complete package at defensive tackle because he has a work ethic to match his talent.

Analyst's take: "Goldman stands out the moment you see him from a physical standpoint. He is just built like a D-I defensive tackle, a slightly bigger version of Marvin Austin when he was coming out. While he lacks Austin's natural athleticism he makes up for it with more brute strength and perhaps a higher ceiling because he's still learning. He has violent and quick hands, plays with good leverage and dominates the man in front of him. He won't do many fancy things, he will simply hold the line of scrimmage against the run, push the pocket against the pass and hustle to the outside. He is much better on the field than in camps despite being impressive in a camp setting as well." - Mike Farrell, Rivals.com

Why he's a five-star: "Goldman possesses the size and strength to compete at the next level right now. He does not shy away from competition as Goldman shows up to every camp willing to learn and physically dominates his opponents." - Barry Every, Rivals.com

His coach says: "Eddie is a great athlete for a player his size and he has a rare blend of size, speed and explosiveness. He is very powerful, has good hands he uses well and his hands are quick. He understands his strengths better than most kids do and he uses them to his advantage and doesn't try to do too much. He defeats and destroys the person in front of him and knows by doing that he is freeing up his teammates, but he also makes some great individual plays. Off the field I think he's a better person because he doesn't worry about the recruiting, the notoriety and the whole process. He tries to get his teammates noticed more than himself." - Friendship Collegiate Academy head coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim

Odds and ends: Goldman emerged as a potential star at the MDHigh Camp a year ago and the comparisons to Austin, a five-star defensive tackle from the D.C. area a few years back, started to be made. Goldman carries a 3.1 GPA and wants to study business in college. Although he doesn't play any other sports currently, he wants to play basketball after his senior year of football and fancies himself as a wing player despite his 300-pound size.

NFL player comparison: Jay Ratliff, Dallas Cowboys
