Jones: ND 'perfect for me'

When Jarron Jones arrives at Notre Dame next summer he'll be ready.

Of all the factors that prompted the 6-foot-7, 308-pound defensive lineman to commit to the Irish program on Monday, the biggest might have been the correlation between the life he's experienced at the Aquinas Institute in Rochester, N.Y. and the one he'll dive into in South Bend.

"It's perfect for me," Jones said. "Notre Dame is just like my high school, it's not even a big transition. The small class sizes, just typical high school to college. It's not going to be an adjustment in atmosphere and it's going to be something that I'm already used to."

Notre Dame grabbed hold of Jones' attention over the summer during an unofficial visit to campus, a trip that impacted the U.S. Army All-American so much that he dropped a verbal pledge to Penn State the next week. From that point on, the Irish coaching staff worked to make sure Jones' next commitment would be to Notre Dame.

Now that he's made it, Jones said he's not going back. He hopes to attend Notre Dame's home game against USC and said he won't take any more college visits.

"Notre Dame is it," he said.

Much like the school itself, Jones believes the Irish coaching staff is a fit.

"I really feel like the coaches at Notre Dame are younger, more energetic like my high school coaches, more hands on and that's really what I need," Jones said. "This morning I just thought it was right. I just really felt like I'll be more successful at Notre Dame than at Penn State or any other college."

Jones is Notre Dame's 14th verbal commitment and the second defensive lineman alongside four-star interior prospect Sheldon Day.

Jones called recruiter Bob Diaco to deliver the news and planned to speak with head coach Brian Kelly later Monday night.

"Just pretty much talking more academics than athletics," Jones said when asked about Notre Dame's most impactful recruiting pitch. "We all know football will take care of itself and if it doesn't work out you have a degree."
