Week 1 interesting stats: Frosh record
Each week during the college football season, we looked at some statistics involving individuals and/or teams that we found intriguing. Here is this week's version:
Oregon State true freshman TB Malcolm Agnew ran for 223 yards (and three TDs) in the Beavers' shocking loss to Sacramento State. The one bit of good news for Oregon State: Agnew set an NCAA record for the most yards gained by a freshman in his first college game. The mark had been 212, by Texas A&M's Greg Hill against LSU in 1991. Agnew was a three-star recruit of St. Louis De Smet Jesuit.
East Carolina surrendered 56 points in losing to South Carolina. That's the fourth time in the Pirates' past six games that they've allowed at least 50. And since Ruffin McNeill took over before as coach before last season, ECU has given up at least 40 points 11 times in his 14 games, including a streak of seven games in a row.
Thirty of the 118 FBS teams that opened last weekend were held to less than 100 rushing yards. Of the 30, nine were Big Six teams: Arizona, Auburn, Colorado, Florida State, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oregon, USC and West Virginia. Colorado, Ole Miss and Oregon were the only losers out of that group, though.
Four teams threw for more than 400 yards, and three were from the Big 12: Baylor, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The other was Arizona. Arizona, OU and Oklahoma State were among the nine teams that averaged more than 300 passing yards last season. Baylor averaged 280.7 last season. Arizona plays at Oklahoma State on Thursday.

New Pitt coach Todd Graham likes a fast pace on offense, but even he had to be cringing Saturday at the lopsided time-of-possession advantage enjoyed by his opponent. Pitt beat Buffalo 35-16, though Buffalo had the ball for 17:36 more than the Panthers.
Fourteen teams scored at least 50 points in their openers, and eight of them played FCS opponents.
