Sources: Osweiler leaning toward entering NFL Draft

Quarterback Brock Osweiler is strongly leaning toward bypassing his senior year at Arizona State and declaring for the NFL Draft according to two sources directly familiar with his thought process, ASUDevils.com has learned.

The deadline to declare for the Draft is Jan. 15, but one source said Osweiler could make a decision public as soon as Friday.

Osweiler, who became ASU's first-ever 4,000 yard passer in a single season in the team's 56-24 loss to Boise State in the Maaco Las Vegas Bowl Dec. 22, did not attend a team meeting Wednesday according to a program source.

Osweiler finished the 2011 season with 4,036 yards and also set a school single season record with a 63.2 percent completion percentage. He threw more passes and had more completions than any quarterback in a season at ASU and had 26 touchdown passes, fourth most all time at the school.

Sources close to Osweiler said he has been contemplating entering the Draft since it was determined that former offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone would not return to ASU next season following the dismissal of head coach Dennis Erickson at the conclusion of the regular season.

Mazzone took the offensive coordinator position at UCLA under new coach Jim Mora Jr. several weeks ago.

It's unclear where Osweiler projects in the Draft if indeed he does declare because most analysts had not anticipated he would make himself available, but he doesn't appear to be considered a likely top two round selection.

Two NFL scouts, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they aren't permitted to speak about the subject publicly, said Osweiler wouldn't likely be selected in the first half of the seven round Draft even if he performs well in individual workouts.
