Holtz picks Pitt

Pitt landed its second commitment in two days when Shaler (Pa.) tight end JP Holtz committed to the Panthers Wednesday night.

Holtz announced his commitment during a live broadcast on KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh. He picked Pitt over offers from Michigan State, Purdue, Arkansas, Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, Penn State, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, Virginia, and West Virginia.

He originally committed to Penn State in July and stayed firm in that commitment until the crisis in State College in November. Holtz then reopened his recruitment and was closing to committing to Pitt when Todd Graham left the Panthers for Arizona State.

New Pitt coach Paul Chryst made Holtz a priority when he was hired in December. After a series of meetings with Chryst and the new coaching staff, Holtz decided to pull the trigger for Pitt.

Holtz's commitment comes less than 24 hours after Sammamish (Wash.) Eastlake cornerback Ryan Lewis committed. Lewis and Holtz are Chryst's second and third commits, respectively, following Woodland Hills linebacker Mike Caprara, who committed two weeks ago.
