2015 QB De'Andre Johnson commits to FSU
Jacksonville First Coast High's pipeline continued on Friday when 2015 quarterback De'Andre Johnson announced he is ready to be a Seminole. He has known for a while about his decision and revealed his choice on Friday following the final day of the Jimbo Fisher football Camp.
"My entire family was in the meeting with head coach Jimbo Fisher, wide receivers coach Lawrence Dawsey and quarterbacks coach Dameyune Craig," Johnson explained. "I asked them a lot of questions about how would I fit in there and succeed. Then after 20 minutes, I told Coach Fisher I'm ready to be a Seminole. Coach Fisher was very excited and there was some jumping around."
This decision is one that Johnson carefully considered. He took visits and spoke with coaches from several different schools.
"It's a blessing that the FSU staff wanted me this bad so early. I knew in the back of my mind this was going to be where I end up," Johnson said. "My family loves FSU, First Coast loves FSU and I always feel the same way every time I'm here and that's at home."
Johnson kept his appearance low-key during his two-day visit. He hung out with a lot of the current FSU players on the visit like Bobby Hart, Reggie Northrup and Jameis Winston.
"To be honest, what really sold me on FSU were the current players. Those guys are a family, so that meant a lot," he said.
As a freshman at First Coast, Johnson put up gaudy numbers on the way to a berth in the Class 7A state title game. He threw for 2,912 yards and 32 touchdowns against just seven interceptions last year.
Johnson stated that while he can run, he's a pass-first quarterback who waits for the play to break down before taking off. During his recruitment, what did FSU tell Johnson they liked the most about him?
"Coach Craig is pretty hard on me, but you need that as a quarterback," Johnson explained. "He likes my ability to read the defense, take off when plays break down and my technique in making all the throws with my release point."
Although he is just a rising sophomore, he already plans to do some heavy recruiting for the Seminoles.
"I'm already working hard on another 2015 prospect in linebacker Sherrod Pittman. I just got through talking with him a little while ago, so we can keep it going in bring national championships to Tallahassee," he said. "I'm also talking to Jacques Patrick from Timber Creek to get him here at running back. He's a good friend of mine. I'm just talking to as many as I can."
De'Andre Johnson is FSU's second commitment for the 2015 class, joining Auburndale High's Derwin James
