Quarterback EJ Manuel missed FSU's first fall scrimmage on Thursday with a right foot injury but is expected to return to practice later this week.

Manuel was held out Thursday for precautionary reasons after suffering a foot injury during a two-minute drill in Wednesday's practice. Fisher called it a "freak thing" when someone fell on Manuel's foot during a passing drill.

Fisher said that if Manuel doesn't return for practice on Friday, he will be back for a two-a-day practice on Saturday.

"If had to play he could have played," FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said. "It was swollen up and he would have been out there hobbling and probably aggravate the heck out of it. If we go (practice on Friday) he'd probably go half (healthy) and the next day he'd probably be full (go). Made no sense to push it, give us a chance to work some of these other quarterbacks. If we had a game though, he would have played. He was just swelling and wanted to get that out of there."

Fisher said another reason for holding Manuel out was to limit him from compensating for the injury.

"When you get that right foot, that's your plant foot," Fisher said. "When it's tender and you're pushing off, I didn't want him to develop any bad habits, make him hop around in there and somebody fall on it again and make it worse."

Manuel, a Virginia Beach, Va. native, threw for 2,666 yards and 18 touchdowns against eight interceptions last season in his first season as the Seminoles' full-time starter. Manuel missed one full game (Clemson) and portions of two other games (Oklahoma, Wake Forest) with a sprained AC joint in his non-throwing shoulder.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Clint Trickett took reps with the first team offense during the scrimmage. Trickett threw for 675 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions as Manuel's backup in 2011. Trickett is leading a battle for the No. 2 quarterback job with redshirt freshman Jacob Coker.

"I thought Clint did some really good things early," Fisher said.
