Deng and Humphries Sign Their Letters

New Page 1

The 2002 recruiting class is now signed, sealed, and soon it will be time for Luol Deng and Kris Humphries to deliver. Head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced the official singing of the nation's best two man class on Wednesday afternoon once Deng's letter was in hand at the Duke basketball office.

Luol Deng: SF
6-foot-8, 217 pounds
Rivals Rating: /

Notes:
As a junior Deng averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.5 blocked shots for Blair Academy (NJ). Then he continued to assert himself as the best college bound player throughout the summer circuit including being named the best player at the annual Nike All-American camp this summer.

Rivals Analysis:
"Luol Deng is the most prized recruit in the 2003 class because of several reasons. 1. He is very coachable. 2. When he is on the court, he is like a coach. Deng can play either of the five positions and has the court smarts to direct an offense from the point guard slot. Deng not only has the physical skills to be a major impact player on the college level, he has a tremendous heart..." (

Kris Humphries: PF
6-foot-9, 230 pounds
Rivals Rating: /

Notes:
As a junior Humphries averaged 26.5 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.7 blocks as a junior at Hopkins High School (MN). Throughout the summer Humphries continually proved himself as a legitimate top ten prospect after outplaying both Deng and former Blue Devil recruit Ndudi Ebi in head to head match ups at the Nike camp. Kris played for Team USA at the COPABA (Confederation of Pan American Basketball Associations) Men's Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament that was held in Isla de Margarita, Venezuela, but aside from that was not very active on the AAU circuit aside from the Nike Camp. Instead he spent the summer working out with former NBAers Chris Carr and Trent Tucker.

Rivals Analysis:
"And when one takes a look at Humphries, it's very evident that he has a background in swimming as well, as he is exceptionally agile for his size and has a sleek greyhound type of build. He does not appear to have an ounce of fat on his frame. He has the size to play inside, yet also displayed some skills on the perimeter. As a result, he likely projects as a combo forward at the Division I level."
