Five-stars have lived up to hype at Michigan

With the release of the Rivals250, rankings are a hot topic, and many are left wondering how accurate they are. After looking at the Michigan recruiting classes of 2002-07, one thing is certain - five-star prospects are legit.

TheWolverine.com began with Rivals.com's initial class in 2002 and researched each of the next six classes, ending at 2007 because the 2008 class has only just completed its eligibility and could not meet all of the criteria included (NFL Draft status).

Here are some key points:

  • Of the nine five-star prospects Michigan signed during this six-year span, seven would be drafted (77.8 percent), far outpacing the success of U-M's 57 four-star recruits (21.5 percent) and the Wolverines' 50 three-star talents (8.0 percent).

  • Michigan's nine five-stars would start, on average, 29.3 games per man, again far outpacing the four-stars (11.8 starts per player), the three-stars (9.6 starts) and the two-stars (5.6).

  • The Maize and Blue's five-stars would also earn six first- or second-team all-conference accolades (66.7 percent). Michigan's four-stars produced an all-league performer once out of every 6.3 signees while three-stars produced were one out of every 8.3 committed prospects.

  • The difference between a four- and a three-star has not been staggering at Michigan(though it's there), but the difference between a five-star and a three-star is significant, and even between a five- and four-star recruit.
