Trey Burke named National Player Of The Year by SI

With the regular season and conference tournaments in the rearview mirror and madness of march just days away, national awards are starting to trickle out - and to no one's surprise, Michigan point guard Trey Burke is getting his fair share.

Sports Illustrated named Burke the National Player Of The Year. The last Wolverine to win any National Player Of The Year award was the legendary Cazzie Russell in 1966.

The magazine also put Burke on their first-team All-American ballot, along with Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart, Creighton forward Dough McDermott, Gonzaga forward Kelly Olynyk and Indiana center Cody Zeller.

The USBWA and the Sporting News have also named Burke a first-team All-American. And he has a few more chances to bring home hardware; he's a finalist for both the Oscar Robertson Trophy, given annually to the "most outstanding player" in the country, and the Naismith Player Of The Year Award.

The Naismith has never been given to a Michigan player. Russell is the lone Wolverine to win the Robertson Trophy.

Burke, whose 3.31 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks second in the nation, is averaging 19.2 points and 6.7 assists per game.
