Burke up for another award

NBA Draft-bound Trey Burke has earned nearly every award college basketball could dole out this year, including consensus national player of the year acclaim. Now he's drawing consideration for an even bigger award.

Burke has been named one of five finalists for Sports Illustrated's inaugural Male College Athlete of the Year award. Volkswagen is the presenting sponsor.

Others on the list are Cornell's Kyle Dake (wrestling), USC's Khaled Holmes (football), St. Cloud State's Drew LeBlanc (hockey) and Duke's Tyler Thornton (basketball). Criteria for the award includes performance on the field and academically, as well as sportsmanship and commitment to community.

Finalists will be featured in the magazine's May 27 issue (hitting newsstands on May 22), and the winner profiled with video on SI.com on May 22.

Burke finished the 2012-13 season averaging career bests in points (18.6), assists (6.67), field goal percentage (46.3), three-point percentage (38.4), free throw percentage (80.1) and steals (1.59). He scored in double figures in 37 of 39 games this season.

Burke achieved the fifth-highest point total in U-M history with 727 and became just the sixth Wolverine to record 700-plus points in a single season. He was the only Big Ten player to score at least 15 points in every conference game. Burke recorded 67 double-figure scoring games among 73 in his career, including 20 contests with 20 or more points.

Burke is bound for the 2013 NBA Draft, slated for June 27, 2013.
