Burke goes to Minnesota with ninth pick, traded to Utah

Michigan head coach John Beilein was the first one on his feet when the Minnesota Timberwolves picked point guard Trey Burke with the No. 9 pick in Thursday night's NBA Draft. Burke didn't last long in a T-Wolves hat, traded to Utah for the No. 14 and No. 21 picks.

Burke, predicted by most to go between No. 2 and 8, seemed stunned when the Detroit Pistons passed on him at No. 8 in favor of Georgia guard Kentavious Caldwell Pope, but he'll be the Jazz' point guard of the future.

"The Utah Jazz have needed a point guard for the most part since John Stockton retired," former Wolverine and current ESPN analyst Jalen Rose said. "Trey Burke is clearly to me the most conventional and best point guard in this draft. He can play off pick and roll, get his own shot and make players around him better."

Burke brought a bus of 60 people with him to the draft in Brooklyn.

"I want to thank them," he said. "I wouldn't be here without my family and supporters.

"I'm ready to come right in and work hard from day one, ready to make in impact. I'm excited right now. I want to thank everyone."

Burke is U-M's first, first-round draft pick since Jamal Crawford in 2000. He nearly went to the NBA after his freshman season but stayed, averaging 18.6 points a game in 2012-13 in leading U-M to the national title game. He scored 24 points in an 82-76 loss to Louisville.
