Stanford gets its QB

There was never much mystery with Stanford's approach to 2014 quarterback recruiting. A few months after evaluating Palo Alto signal caller Keller Chryst at its summer camp in June of 2012, Stanford offered Chryst a scholarship.

It would be the only 2014 quarterback scholarship offer Stanford would need to extend.

After months of speculation, Chryst delivered a verbal commitment to the Cardinal. Chryst's mother, Shelley, confirmed the news to Cardinal Sports Report in a text message on Friday afternoon.

Chryst is ranked as the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com, and the No. 31 overall player in the Rivals 100.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder had high interest in Stanford dating back to the beginning of his recruitment.

"It's thrilling and exciting," said Keller's mother Shelley of the Cardinal offer last August. "I'm sure Keller is excited but he knows that there's still a lot of work ahead of him, so that's really what he's focused on."

Eventually, Chryst decided on a top group of Stanford, USC, Pitt and Alabama. He took multiple visits to Stanford over the course of the year, including one for the Cardinal's dramatic win over USC, one for a Junior Day this spring, and one earlier this summer.

And in the end, despite Chryst's family ties to Pitt and his strong relationship with USC, Stanford received the quarterback's verbal commitment.

If Chryst's Rivals ranking (No. 31 in the nation) and Stanford commitment do not change and he, he will be the highest-ranked quarterback the Cardinal have signed since the program inked Los Gatos' Trent Edwards more than a decade ago.

Chryst is scheduled to participate in the Under Armour All American game this January.
