McKenzie tweets Irish commitment

Isaiah McKenzie had hoped to commit to Notre Dame this weekend during an official visit.

But because the three-star receiver from Plantation, Fla., didn’t have a test score heading into Notre Dame’s rivalry weekend with USC, that visit was pushed back. That didn’t stop McKenzie from getting done what he wanted to do during that trip to the Midwest, mainly making a commitment to Notre Dame.

Instead of doing it in person, McKenzie settled for doing it on Twitter.

“ND Nation stand up! @JoyStick_Izzy is headed to South Bend!!!” McKenzie tweeted late Friday night.

Calls and texts by Irish Illustrated to the standout from American Heritage High School were not returned.

The 5-foot-8, 165-pound receiver becomes Notre Dame’s 17th verbal commitment and third receiver following Justin Brent and Corey Holmes, both of whom plan to be in South Bend this weekend. McKenzie is also the second commitment from American Heritage in two seasons, following freshman inside linebacker Michael Deeb.

McKenzie chose the Irish over Rutgers, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Kentucky.

While McKenzie might not have prototype size, his speed on offense and special teams have helped him get on SportsCenter during his senior season for audacious kickoff returns. That’s part of what the Irish coaching staff liked about McKenzie when they hosted him for a nearly week-long official visit last summer.

McKenzie told Irish Illustrated early this month that he’s been watching Notre Dame this season and likes how the offense pushes the ball to its wide receivers.

“I ‘ve seen what they’re trying to do with their faster guys,” McKenzie told Irish Illustrated. “The way they run their offense is how I’d like it and how they try to get their faster guys open.”

Now McKenzie can count himself among that group.
